Bye Bye Television

He did it.
My husband unplugged the television.
Not quite as dramatic as cutting the cord, but semi-permanent for the time being
considering I can't really get behind the entertainment center.
Nor would I want to because I am pretty sure a colony of dead and live spiders live there.
Just sayin'.
I've been humming and hawing over the idea for a LONG time.
But then the kiddos get sick
and they need to rest
and watching favorite movies and television shows are classic sick time and keep them nice and cozy on the couch.
And then there is the week after they get sick where they are still tired and I am a zombie ...
got to have the tv for that.

And then I rationalize that at least it's educational.
No Tom and Jerry here.
When I held something up to my eye the other day, my three year old very seriously told me that it wasn't a periscope.
What three year old knows what a periscope is?
A three year old who loves Diego and the mermaids who are the heroes of the ocean.
To be honest I had to google it myself.
I thought it was spy glass thing a majig that pirates might use.
I was wrong.
It's what they use to see on a submarine.
Just ask my three year old.
She also knows all about howler monkeys, red eyed tree frogs, and leather back sea turtles.

But when my husband checks what we've been watching during the day just for fun
and sees that the netflix channel was on for 10 hours ...
(10 HOURS)
Time for a change.
Sometimes Lily turns a show on from Netflix
(no commercials - that makes it a little better, right?)
and then plays with it on in the background.
So the 10 hours isn't complete zombie ville on the couch.

Seriously, the first thing Lily, my three year old, says in the morning is "Milk and Movie time."
Lovely, lovely.
That totally makes for Internet and ice cream time for Mommy.
Or blogging and bon bons ...
take your pick.
We're a couple of technology junkies who need our fix to get the day started.
But is it good for us?
Perhaps not.

To be fair, I've slowly cut back our television time.
My husband and I never watch in the evening anymore.
And in the mornings I've made it a rule that we have to eat breakfast, get dressed, read scriptures, and help clean for 15 minutes before the television gets turned on.
Some days we even make it until 11 am.

But it's hard when you have a gal who is savvy with electronics.
In my next home, the television is going to be happily hidden away behind doors of a chic entertainment cabinet.
But for now ... there it is larger than life staring my three year old down.
Our cable is actually out.
But that doesn't stop her.
She knows where to find the Netflix disk.
And how to put it in the Wii.
Did I mention she is an expert with the Wiimote?

So it's tough love today for me and her.
No more television for a week.
I don't know who it will be harder for.
Me or her?

Stay tuned!
I am betting the first few days we have withdrawals, but then it will be SO MUCH BETTER.
We'll be creative.
Paint.
Dress up.
Cook.
Hide and Seek.

  2. So awesome! When ours were little our only TV exploded. We did not replace it for a long time. Best years of our life.

Now that the kids are teens, they still really do not watch much. Except for movies. We are addicted to our movies! Guess we will work on that.

  3. Yeah! Big change, but after a week it will get easier. Hang in there and it will all be worth it.

We moved a year and a half ago and gave our big bulky tv away because it was going to be in storage for at least 6 months...well, we never got a new one! I do not regret it at all! It is actually kind of nice. When we go to visit family, they are often impressed on how my kids can entertain themselves in the car and everywhere else pretty well.

  4. We canceled our t.v. cable last fall and haven't missed it a bit. Oh, we'll throw in a movie every so often when we feel like vegging but it's amazing the things one can accomplish when there's no t.v.!

    You just might like it.

  5. We have almost never had cable tv. We had it once and I watched HGTV until I could use all the terms in my sleep...and they all started to sound alike anyway.

Now, I don't miss it. We have netflix, but only the mailed movies, so about twice a week, if that, we get to watch a movie.

I grew up without any TV and my kids not much. They all watch way more now...but they are adults so it's their choice. I'd take a good book or a crossword puzzle anytime.

  6. Good job! It's amazing what kids will find to do, (and me I guess), when TV isn't an option. On their own, they figure out things to do. We will probably never turn ours off (I've got some shows I love too)... but the idea of it sounds fab! I think we're responsible watchers, mostly evenings, never during the day.
How did it go, by the way!
